Description

The purpose of this course is to enable the teachers to demonstrate the ability to assess initial English language proficiency for placement and instruction, enable the teachers to identify and/or develop instruments to determine the ability and instructional placement of students to function in regular classes for English speakers.
Teachers will develop an understanding of concepts and issues specific to formative and summative assessment and how to use standards-based procedures with English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students.
Standard 1
Teachers will develop instruction informed by assessing student understanding in multiple ways and use assessment data to identify the appropriate instructional approach, select appropriate scaffolds, guide differentiation of instruction, and use corrective feedback.
Standard 2
Teachers will use a variety of assessment tools to monitor student progress, achievement, and learning gains.

TE.1.1: Teachers will identify appropriate accommodations for assessments and progress monitoring tools to evaluate ELLs.
Clarification 1: Instructional accommodations include using bilingual dictionaries, glossaries, and other supports.
Standard MT.2: Classroom-Based Assessment for ELLs
TE.2.1: Teachers will select evidence-based tools and techniques to assess listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the content areas.
TE.2.2: Teachers will implement strategies for formative and summative assessments to support ELLs’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the content areas.
